Building Literacy Through Sweets with Connie Milstein

Most of the time, when you purchase sweets, you aren’t necessarily doing anything good for your health or for others.  At Connie’s Bakery and General Store, however, you are actually assisting adults with their literacy when you buy baked goods and other items.  That’s because at Connie’s Bakery, founded by Connie Milstein, 100% of the after tax profits go to six non-profit organizations each year.  Distributed through Foundation Sweet Success, these funds help non-profit organizations with their many needs.

One of the six non-profits picked this year from Connie’s Bakery is the Literacy Volunteers of Westchester County, Inc.  This non-profit organization is dedicated to providing student-centered English literacy services to adults.  They focus on the needs of those in Westchester County, while also acting as a community resource for the improvement of literacy aims throughout the country.

The White House Showing Support for Soldiers

Blue Star Families, where Connie Milstein is on the Board of Directors, applauds The White House for its recent show of support. Recently, First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden spoke to the National Governors’ Association at The White House about military families. While Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden have both traveled a great deal to meet with military families around the world, they asked America’s Governors now to join in their efforts to support groups like Blue Star Families.

First Lady Michelle Obama said, “We’re going to need your support and encouragement to make this a reality. We’re very excited about this initiative because we think that this will not only help our troops and their families, but it will help us as a nation link together and be even stronger.”

First Lady Obama emphasized the bi-partisan nature of the initiative, saying that we can all work together to show support for our soldiers.

Recent News at the BSF

Last month, First Lady Michelle Obama and Tom Brokaw were hosted on an Oprah show, discussing the work of the Blue Star Families and the issue many military families face of being isolated.  At the same time, it appears that a large majority of Americans are totally oblivious to the plight of these courageous soldiers and their families.  Mrs. Obama discussed different ways of helping military spouses find good jobs – especially with the issue of being on the move – and childcare.  Support from the community is vital in these situations as well.
