Blue Star Families Survey of Military Family Concerns

In May, Blue Star Families, with director Connie Milstein, did an online survey of 3,634 members of military families to discover the major issues that they deal with on a regular basis. The main concerns were identified as: pay and benefits, operational pace of the time, effects of deployments on children, spouse employment and education. Another significant issue that all family members are forced to live with is high stress level. After nearly ten years of war, it is certainly understandable that stress levels in the family increase dramatically when a family member is deployed.

News at CURE

Recent news at CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy) is that a new CEO has been appointed.  Carmita Vaughan will step up to the position on November 1, 2010.  Vaughan was delighted at the appointment, and in a statement said: “This is an amazing calling, as well as a critically important opportunity.”  Indeed, her own mother was an epilepsy sufferer and died prematurely, nearly a decade ago.  She added: “I am extremely excited and humbled by the chance to lead this organization that seeks to find a cure for this disease and bring peace to the over three million Americans who suffer from epilepsy.”   The organization’s chairman, Susan Axelrod, is clearly in support of this appointment: “Carmita is the ideal person to lead CURE in this exciting new period of growth.  We are determined to revolutionize research dynamics in epilepsy, and expand awareness and advocacy at all levels. Carmita’s diverse leadership experiences, along with her personal passion for this cause will facilitate a seamless transition. Her vision and leadership will set the stage for a strong future for CURE.”  Connie Milstein  also understands the importance of this organization’s work and serves on its board of directors.
